Domitii 's world,

of the Voltinia tribe

(Barbebelle's domain in Rognes),

Ist century AD

Us, Domitii, of the tribe Voltinia (in Rognes)

In 1961, A. Pons put back in the day the mausoleum of our family, Domitii. In 1961, 1963 and 1967, the archaeologist Y. Burnand made the excavations on our domain. Our family grave is situated in the private domain of Barbebelle

in Rognes.

Our Gentilice (first name and surname)

I am Lucius Domitius of the tribe Voltinia. My wife, Domitia, daughter of Sextus, gave me three sons. The first Decimus Domitius Celer is military tribune, a prefect of the workers and it is himself in his lifetime who raised the monument. Our second son is Lucius omitius Magu --[-] and the last one Domitius Macer is military tribune. It carried out a single equestrian militia and is pontiff (municipal career) and raised the monument under the reign of emperor

GAIVS IVLIVS CAESAR AVGVSTVS GERMANICVS (Caligula - 37/41 AD).

Our family belongs to the city of Aquae Sextiae (Aix-en-Provence), Roman colony, as well as our lands of Barbebelle.

Our landed domain

Our agricultural domain is situated on the whole valley of the average Concernade (river), we possess a villa and its quite close agricultural center in Grand-Saint-Paul with buildings of exploitation and the arable land of part and the others of Concernade. We make cultivate essentially the vineyard. We do not miss water which we receive from a small aqueduct and we make exploit woods in the chain of Trevaresse. Romarus, son of Ittus, lived on our lands himself.

Ours beliefs

Besides the gods and the goddesses of the Roman pantheon such as Mercury (which the altar which is also dedicated to him to San Peyre of Lambesc), we still worship the topical god Accorus, the protective genius and the rural protective divinities as Uroicae and A[-] inenses (to Beaulieu) for which altars were raised by peregrins Verax, son of Antenor and Potissuma, daughter of Olluna. We also make dedications (ex-voto) to nymphs (also to Fontvert by the slave or the peregrin Servatus but still by Gaius P [-] Satur, to the Parques (locality Rougon) by Materna and on statuette as Statia Phtengis made him.

In Puy-Sainte-Réparade

We also dedicate dedications to our close friends as made her "Valeria, daughter of Gaius, granddaughter of Quintus, for Titus Hostilius, her excellent husband, quaestor, and for Gaius Hostilius, her devoted son. She raised in her lifetime (this monument) for herself and her" (domain of Fontvert to Saint-Canadet, roman period before the emperor Claude). Cornelia Felicula still made her to the Gods Manes (locality Papéty).

In Lambesc

"Sextus settled its wish to Suleviae (guardian divinities) willingly and rightly" (in the Grand-Verger to Lambesc). On this ground of the colony, the topical god Iboïte, stemming from the sanctuary of the source (in the district of the Font of Arles), is worshipped, that it is by us Roman and Latin citizens that by our emancipated slaves. Who are they these emancipated slaves ? You who ignore it and that I knew due to their master :

The Emancipated slaves (with cognomen : the nickname, associated to the traditional tria nomina

of the Roman citizens)

-Sextus Pompeius Theophilus who was freed by his master Proculus, Pompeia who freed M [...] Amoena but still Decimus who freed Decimus Ratius Bassus.

In Vernègues

In Château-Bas, where is held an antique small town of several hectares, not far from the oil-works and not far from his antique well with edge formed of four paving stones, you will find the Corinthian temple (30/20 BC) when was an altar dedicated to Thunderous Jupiter, you can gather yourself or venerate Minerve, Mercury, Juno and Hercule and Nymphs. You must know, even if the time did not lead him to you until your look, even if a stele was dedicated to Lucius Veratius Veranus.

In Alleins

Sextus P [...] Proculus made a dedication to Jupiter.

Iulius's family, of the tribe Voltinia

(in Aix-en-Provence)

The tribe Voltinia includes notable's family of the colony of Aquae Sextiae, Iulii. Sextus Iulius Verus, son of Paternus, has the senatorial rank and is the boss of the colony. Sextus Iulius Paternus, son of Sextus, is military tribune of the 7th Legion Gemina Felix, who settled the flaminat, duum or to quattuorvir, boss of the colony. Marcus Iulius, son of Sextus, military tribune of the 8th Legion Augusta, flamine of Auguste, boss of the colony. Three men are of the same family with the person of a young senator, his father and his uncle, a brother of the precedent.

The Gentilice Iulius

This gentilice would remind that it is a local family integrated for a long time into the Latin colony and which gradually raised itself up to its summit. It was one of the most illustrious families of the city.

The french archaeologist J. Gascou proposes the link of the name Sextus Aemilius Paullus of that of the representatives of the big family of republican period of the Aemilii who had the nickname Paullus and that of his wife Aemilia Regilla of the Aemilii Regilli. At the origin of this family from Aix could be a Gaul who would have reached the Roman citizenship thanks to Lepide at the time of his proconsulate. With its gentilice, Lepide would have transmitted to this "ancestor" and to diverse members of his family of the rather frequent nicknames in people Aemilia"

"For Sextus Aemilius Paullus, his father, for Aemilia Regilla, daughter of Quintus, his mother, for Sextus Aemilius Paullinus, his brother, for Titus Aemilius Burrus, his brother. Gaius Aemilius Vastus raised (this monument) for his" (julio-claudian period)

Attius's family, of the tribe Teretina (in Arles)

The tribe Teretina is native of Arles. One of its families would have fixed its house or possessed a domain, on territory from Aix. This notable's family would have emigrated in the colony of Aquae Sextiae. "[-] Attius Vindex, son of Marcus, belonging to the tribe Teretina, military tribune of the legion... Auguste, of the legion, and the pious XIth legion, ordered by will to raise (this monument) for himself and for Marcus Attius, son of Marcus, belonging to the tribe Teretina, his father, for daughter of Gaius, her mother Attia, daughter of Marcus, her sister and his heiress, made raise (this monument) " (after 42 AD).
